Introduction

In science we have been discussing animals and their classifications.  We have also discussed animal adaptations.  Using this knowledge you are going to design a zoo for the village of Hartland.

The Task

You will be designing a zoo based on the following information;

  • Animals need to be arranged according to biome;
  • Exhibits should have plants and landscape that match its natural habitat;
  • Create your zoo using the map paper provided by me;

The Process

To accomplish the task, you will first need to discover where the natural habitat of the animals exists.  Using the links that are provided, explore and note where they can be found.  Take notes on the zoo print out provided by me.  The only biomes that you will be looking for are Tundra, Deciduous Forest, Rainforest and the Desert.

       1.  First you'll be assigned to a team of 2-3 students.

2.    Next divide up the animals equally and use the following websites to discover each animals biome, diet and natural habitat.   What it’s like where you live

                           World Biomes

                            The World’s Biomes

3.      Then as a group design your zoo according to biomes.

  1. Draw and label a miniature version of you zoo including animals and vegetation.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated as a group.  I will look for the following qualifiers.  All group members will take a part explaining and demonstrating their zoo to the other groups.

Biomes

1-2 animals are in the correct biome, the rest are not and all biomes are labeled.

3-4 animals are in there correct biome and all biomes are labeled.

Only 1-2 animals are out of their correct biome and all biomes are correctly labeled.

Biomes are labeled and all animals are in the correct biomes.

Landscape/Plants

Landscape/plants for the animals are in the exhibit but do not match what they would eat in their natural habitat.

Landscape/ plants match what the animals would eat in their natural habitat.

Most of the landscape/ plants that are found in the exhibit match what the animals would eat in their natural habitat.

The landscape/ plants found in the exhibit match what the animals would eat in their natural habitat.

Map

Map is not labeled and has no color

Map has some labels and little color.

Map is labeled with 1-2 items missing and 1-2 items are not colored.

Map is clearly labeled and colorful.

Conclusion

After completing your zoo you have demonstrated an understanding of animals, their habitats and diets.  What did you enjoy from this activity?  Would you enjoy working at the Milwaukee County Zoo?  What type of job would you like to do there?  What do you think some of the challenges are to working at a zoo?
