Introduction
You and your
colleagues have just been chosen by your employer to create an elegant
Quinceañera for Adriana López Sosa. You and your team, along with several
other agencies, will present your finished plan to
*Your task as a
group is to plan the best Quinceañera for Adriana López Sosa within a limited
budget.
*Your team budget is
10,000 dollars.
*Each member of your
team will choose a different role. You will all look for information
pertaining to your specific role on the Internet.
*Each group will
create a PowerPoint portfolio to present to the Familia López during your sales
pitch. You will need to create a document that shows all of the details for the
party including visual representations of the dress, shoes, tiara,
transportation, banquet hall, etc.
Remember, for an event like this, the details count! The López family, represented by a
panel of students, will vote for the best presentation. The winning team will be exempted from
the test following the project and will be the main designers for our class
Quinceañera party.
*You will have 1
week from today to create your PowerPoint portfolio and prepare your sales
pitch. (You will have 5 days in class to work.) Be creative! Your
final pitch will be graded on the accuracy and visual appeal of the
presentation. Your grade will be
determined by your part of the portfolio and your group’s evaluation of your
performance. Remember, you are expert party planners in
competition with other professionals.
Only the best group will get to plan the López Quinceañera.
Process
1. Form your
party-planning agency with four other people. Your group must be composed of males and
females. Choose a name for
your company.
2. Each of you
now needs to choose a role to play within the company. Your choices are as
follows:
**Note
to all coordinators** The López family lives in the Milwaukee area so you should use
local sources as much as possible.
Of course, some things can be identified from on-line vendors. Also, remember that you are a team and
communication will be a key element in ensuring your success in your
presentation. You will especially
need to be sharing details together with the Location/Transportation Director
as he/she is in charge of making the schedule for the day. You will need to be flexible and share
the money you have fairly (which does not necessarily mean equally) to create
the best party proposal.
The
Food/Decoration Director is responsible for choosing the food to be served as
well as determining how the hall will be decorated. In choosing the decorations you should pick a theme and
color scheme. You should discuss
with your group what things you think are necessary to present an enjoyable
atmosphere and provide guests with dinner. You will be responsible for providing a sample of the main
dish and/or cake you choose the day of the presentation for the panel to
taste. Remember, you need to take
the family’s country of origin into account when decorating and choosing food.
Your
responsibilities include exploring the various styles of Latin music and
choosing a selection of music that is appropriate to the family’s background. You and your group should decide the
country of origin of the López family so you can choose music that they will
enjoy. Decide if a band or deejay
will play or if there will be another form of entertainment. You are also the primary person
responsible for the design and creation of the PowerPoint presentation of your
group’s proposal.
Among
your responsibilities are the decisions of where the event will take
place. You will need to begin by
selecting a Catholic church. Then
select the party location (park, hotel, club, home of family, etc.). Remember that the family wants various
options, so price out more than one and share your findings. Also, it is up to you to create a
schedule of events for the day and determine how the quinceañera, her family,
damas, and chambelanes will be transported from home to the church to a picture
taking location, to the party and then home. Include the times in your schedule and write the entire
schedule in Spanish.
It
is your responsibility to choose the clothing and accessories that the
quinceañera, damas, and chambelanes will wear. You will also need to determine what additional accessories
the quinceañera needs. This could
include jewelry, shoes, etc. Also
determine if the quinceañera is going to have her hair and make-up done at a
salon or at home and account for those costs. Combine the information you have learned from class along
with the research you do connected with Webquest to help you determine the
correct accessories and attire.
Make sure you communicate with the Gift/Photography Coordinator so you
do not overlap on anything and to share resources.
Your job
requires the selection of a photographer for the occasion and the traditional
gifts for the Quinceañera and the guests. Decide if you want to find a
professional photographer that provides videos as well or find a family member
to take the pictures. Also, you
are in charge of finding the symbolic gifts the Quinceañera receives at the
mass as well as the commemorative favors that the family may pass out at the
mass as well as the table favors (similar to something you might have at a
wedding). Use your Internet research
sources to help you.
3. In order to plan a Quinceañera celebration, you must first do more investigation to better understand it. Use the links below to help you complete the worksheet handed out by your teacher. Keep in mind your role as you read as you may find hints to help you with your portion of the event planning. When you finish the worksheet, hand it in for credit.
4.
On a piece of paper or in a Word document, create a list of the things you
think you will need to get price quotes for and possibly pictures of for the
slide show. Write an estimated cost for each item.
5. Number the items on your list by
importance. Number one would be the most important and so on. This
way you will know what you could eliminate first if necessary for budget
reasons.
6. Now, take a
little time to divide your budget according to how much you feel each person
should need. You may give more money to one person over another due to
the nature of their portion of the whole project. For example, if you are
going to ask a family member to take pictures and create the video, you may not
need to give as much money to the Gift/Photography Coordinator. As a group decide and agree upon
how to best divide your funds.
7. Individually,
you will look for your own information on the Internet. It is essential that
you keep the annotated log of websites you have found and what you found
there. This log is in the student
share drive in the QUINCE folder.
Open it and do a Save As with a new title in your personal folder(not on
the S drive). Remember that you
MUST fill out the annotated log as you go. Each director is responsible for turning in his/her own
annotated log on the day of the presentation. Type in the topic and paste the website address to properly
cite your sources. Here are some
sites you to get you started. You
may need to find sites other than these.
Dresses,
accessories and more!

**E-Bay is another site where you might find deals.
8. When
everyone has their information, get together and share what you have found with
your team. Discuss your options and make final decisions on what to keep
and what to throw out. You must stick to your budget! Make any final decisions
about how the portfolio will be put together.
9. The López Family
will rate your presentation and decide which proposal they like best. They will choose the agency that offers
the best party at the most reasonable cost.
Your
presentation grade will be based upon the following criteria.

Conclusion
Now that you have
completed your webquest, you are more familiar with the different customs and
components of the celebration. Take some time to answer the following
questions about the traditional Quinceañera on a separate sheet of paper.
You may answer in English.
1. After
listening to all of the presentations, what did you learn about planning a
party such as this one?
2. Do you
think that a Quinceañera is really necessary, or do you feel it is a waste of
money? Explain your answer.
3. If you were
giving a Quinceañera, which aspect would be most important to you and why?
